  • What To Expect After Your First Chemical Peel

    Chemical Peel sounds like a science experiment, right? Well, technically it is the marriage of science and skincare that created this incredible treatment but that’s not what we are here to talk about today.

    Today is all about what happens and what to expect after your first Chemical Peel. 

    So often we talk about the benefits and how to prepare for a treatment but not what happens afterward, in detail that is. 

    And that’s what we are here to do! Here at Advanced Skin and Body Solutions, we want to not only provide our clients with the best skincare and body treatments, but we also want to educate them on what to do after a treatment is over to ensure they reap the maximum benefits and see the results for the longest amount of time! 

    So let’s dive in and talk about what to expect after your first Chemical Peel! 

    What Is A Chemical Peel? 

    A Chemical Peel is a medical-grade skin treatment that uses an acid formula to exfoliate and remove the top layers of skin to encourage the growth of healthy, new skin. 

    This means that as your body reacts to the solution and treatment, you will notice changes in your skin as well as a peeling of the skin, hence the name. 

    Unlike a facial, you won’t see the immediate benefits of a Chemical Peel until about 7-10 days after the treatment. It’s during the healing process that your body starts to react to the treatment and reveal the beautiful fresh, healthy skin underneath. 

    Day 1: Immediately After A Chemical Peel

    As soon as your treatment is over you will notice some redness, tingling and swelling. This is normal as your body is reacting to the treatment. It is imperative that you stay out of direct sunlight as your skin has just been compromised and is extremely sensitive. 

    After a few hours the redness, swelling and tingling should reduce however you may experience these for a bit longer as your body starts the healing process. 

    Important: Skincare and makeup should not be used until the treatment is completed!

    Days 2-4: The Healing Process

    You may feel like your skin feels “tight,” dry and irritated with redness and swelling still lingering. 

    Again, this is normal. Unless you are experiencing extreme redness, swelling or burning, this is all part of the process. If ever you feel like something is off, do not hesitate to connect with us for help and guidance! 

    You may notice that your skin starts to produce small pimples, that is your body expelling the bad! It’s a good thing; DO NOT pop them! We know how satisfying it is to pop pimples but refrain from touching your face as much as you can. 

    Continue to stay out of direct sunlight or wear a hat to protect your face. 

    Days 5-7: The Peeling Begins

    Some may experience the peeling much sooner than day 5, but around this time you’ll notice your skin become flaky and start to peel. Again, resist the urge to peel it off! 

    This is the top layers of skin that were treated with the chemical solution. This means that the treatment is working and new, healthy and smooth skin is developing underneath!

    Days 8-14: The Results

    FINALLY! You can now start to see the results of the Chemical Peel you received a little over a week ago!

    You may still see some redness-pinkness on your face but otherwise, it should look fresh, clear and smooth!

    You can now start to use a light, unscented moisturizer with SPF to ensure that your skin stays hydrated and happy! 

    You most likely won’t want to use any makeup because you’ll be thrilled with your smooth, flawless complexion, but if you do, take it easy the first few days after your skin has healed.

Let’s avoid UTIs and yeast infections all around by not soaking in glitter water for 20 mins to an hour.

    Talc

    Talc has been advertised for “toilet and nursery” use since the 1890s. Over decades, the scented powder became associated with “freshness and cleanliness”, causing women to use it in their underwear and genital areas. After reports of women using the product long-term had developed ovarian cancer, Johnson & Johnson lost a lawsuit to the families, paying a $127 million in damages. While the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has not found asbestos in talc powder, it’s best to avoid using the product in your underwear or genital area or soaking in it during a bath until more research is performed.

    “Fragrances,” “Fragrance Oils,” “Fragrance Oil Blend”

    Keep an eye out for these phrases when inspecting the ingredients in your skin care or bath bombs. The FDA allows companies to use these terms in their labeling to protect their proprietary perfume blends. Unfortunately, these known harmful chemicals have been found in bath bombs (some on the EPA’s hazardous waste list…):
    Benzene derivatives
    Aldehydes
    Phthalates

    Please don’t soak in these toxic chemicals!

    Miss your bath bombs fun, bold colors? No worries! There are waterproof LED lights that can you can add to the bottom of your tub to give it the colorful effect that calms you the most.

    Candles, Essential Oils, & Essential Oil Diffusers

    Nothing will better match your glass of wine like a lit candle. Try to find one that’s phthalate- and petroleum-free so you aren’t surrounding yourself with burning toxic chemical. (Safety first; Be careful not to put the candle in an area where it can fall over or set anything on fire!) Prefer an essential oil diffuser? That works, too! You can also add your favorite essential oils to your bath water!

    Epsom Salt

    Epsom salt is a great alternative for bath bombs because it benefits you in many different ways. Epsom salt helps relieve muscle and joint soreness, pain, sprains, headaches, and foot pain. (It can also be used as a face wash, exfoliator, hair texturizer, and more. There so many different uses for it!) Some brands even include essential oils in their Epsom salt.

    While great skin care has been/is / will always be a cornerstone of the beauty world, celebrities (like Alicia Keys and Zoe Saldana) have helped make it one of the hottest trends this summer by wearing their bare faces on red carpets, premieres, and other events. The combination of summertime and soft little-to-no makeup looks has many of us chasing this natural, dewy summer glow.

    But how do we go about getting this summer look?

    Here are 4 tips to achieve healthy, glowing skin.

    Wear Less Face Makeup

    Not only is this the key tip for this trendy summer look but it’s also practical. It allows your skin to breathe and helps keep oils from accumulating and clogging pores. It also keeps you from worrying if your foundation is smearing or looking cakey. Reducing your foundation use will allow you achieve this look while being practical, cost-effective, and time-saving.

    If you don’t feel comfortable going without foundation, dip your toe in by wearing lightweight foundation instead of a full coverage or use a light concealer to cover blemishes or spots.

    Brush up your brows, highlight your cheekbones, and tap on some blush and/or bronzer to elevate your natural look.

    Switch to a Foamy Cleanser

    It’s a common practice to use creamy cleansers during the winter season to fight dry, flaky skin. While this is a great move for cold weather, it isn’t helpful during the summer when we’re dealing with humidity and heat that causes us to sweat more. Switching over to a foam or foamy cleanser will more effectively fight the extra grime and oil that comes with the summer months.

    Exfoliate

    Use a gentle exfoliant 1-2 times a week to reduce dead skin cells and clean out pores. Feel free to use a gentle cleansing brush to thoroughly cleanse without damaging your skin. Try to avoid products containing ingredients that make you more susceptible to the sun, like glycolic or retinol. While we want to make way for product to reach the skin, we don’t want to make way for the sun.

    Sunscreen & Lightweight Moisturizers

    Although our skin holds in moisture better in the summer, it’s still crucial to protect it. Even if you aren’t hanging outside, be sure to apply sunscreen as you start your day to protect you from any sun exposure. If you are spending your day at the beach, lake, etc., remember to reapply often as sunscreen smears and fades – especially on a sweaty day.

    Even if you find your skin oily during these hot months, don’t ditch your moisturizing routine. Switching to a lightweight moisturizer can bring you the protection your skin needs without leaving you feeling sticky or over moisturized. A water-based lightweight moisturizer helps continue to fight wrinkles, reduce the appearance of existing blemishes, and help promote skin rejuvenation.
